The Ankeny Brief
If you want to play golf in Ankeny, the answer for almost everyone is Otter Creek - the city-owned public course that was actually named Iowa's 18-Hole Course of the Year. It's open to anyone, no membership needed, with a real clubhouse and restaurant. Here's what to know, plus where the private club and nearby options fit in.
Otter Creek Golf Course (4100 NE Otter Creek Dr) is Ankeny's public course - city-owned, open to all, par 71, with a pro shop and the Tin Cup Bar & Grille. It was the Iowa Golf Association's 2016 Course of the Year. The Ankeny Golf & Country Club is private (members only). No membership? Play Otter Creek.
Otter Creek is owned by the City of Ankeny and open to the public - you don't need to belong to anything, just book a tee time. It's one of Iowa's better municipal tracks, named the 2016 18-Hole Golf Course of the Year by the Iowa Golf Association. The layout plays to a par of 71 with 47 bunkers, 17 ponds, and plenty of tall grasses and mounding - scenic, but it'll test you. The clubhouse has a fully stocked pro shop, the Tin Cup Bar & Grille restaurant, and banquet/meeting rooms.
Ankeny also has the Ankeny Golf & Country Club, a private member club. It's not open for public tee times - if you're not a member or a member's guest, Otter Creek is your play in town. (Contact the club directly for membership details.)
Ankeny sits at the north edge of the Des Moines metro, so several more public courses are within a 15-25 minute drive across the north metro. Otter Creek is the in-town public option; if it's booked, the wider metro has plenty of tee times.
